Barapani Lake is located near Shilong in Meghalya. Barapani's literal translation in hindi would be "Bada Paani" or Big/vast water. This lake has a legend behind it's name. The story goes that two sisters from the Heavens made their way to Meghalaya, however, only one of the sisters reached their destination. The other sister, due to whatever reason could not make it. So the sister who reached her destination cried her heart out and a lake was formed with her tears, which today is known as Barapani.
However, away form mythological believe, Barapani is actually a river on which a dam was constructed to store water for Shilong area as there was scarcity of water. Being in hills it has turned out to be a very scenic place. Water stored in the lake is used to generate electricity for the whole of Shilong area.
